Iowa Legal Aid is a statewide program that provides free legal services to low-income persons who are experiencing civil legal problems.
Iowa Legal Aid's mission is to secure a full measure of justice in public and private affairs for low-income persons, with emphasis on legal problems involving basic necessities, fundamental rights or safety. Iowa Legal Aid sees to improve the lives of people living in poverty by providing high quality legal services and to empower clients with self-advocacy skills through legal education.
Due to limited human and financial resources, Iowa Legal Aid's Board of Directors has established and annually reviews statewide priorities regarding the types of cases handled by Iowa Legal Aid staff. Areas of highest priority include Income Maintenance; Health Care; Housing; Individual Rights; Family Abuse; Education; Employment; and Consumer/Utility Problems.
An Iowa Legal Aid attorney is available at the MICA office at 1001 South 18th Ave, Marshalltown the third Thursday each month to meet with persons needing help with critical civil issues involving safety, basic needs, and fundamental rights. To set up an appointment with Iowa Legal Aid at the MICA office, call 641-753-5523. Individuals may also apply for legal assistance by calling 1-800-532-1275 toll-free Monday through Friday from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. and from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. (except Thursday afternoons).
